Grade Calculator Features

  • Calculates an overall grade from earned and possible points
  • Supports weighted categories with different percentage values
  • Normalizes partial category weights when they do not total 100%
  • Calculates the final exam score needed for a target course grade
  • Identifies targets that require more than 100% or are already secured

Common Use Cases

Check your current class grade

Add completed assignments and exams to calculate your total earned percentage before the next gradebook update.

Limits and Important Notes

How the Grade Calculator Works

For a points-based class, the calculator divides total points earned by total points possible. For a weighted class, it multiplies every category grade by that category's decimal weight and adds the contributions.

To calculate the grade needed on a final, the tool subtracts the completed-work contribution from the target course grade and divides the remainder by the final exam weight.

Formula

Points grade = earned ÷ possible × 100; weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weights); required final = [target − current × (1 − final weight)] ÷ final weight

Example

If your current grade is 87%, your target is 90%, and the final is worth 30%, you need 97% on the final: [90 − 87 × 0.70] ÷ 0.30 = 97.

  • The common A–F estimate uses 90/80/70/60 cutoffs, but your school or instructor may use a different grading scale.
  • Dropped scores, curved grades, extra credit rules, category caps, and instructor rounding are not applied automatically.
  • The final-grade mode assumes the current grade represents all work completed before the final and that no other assignments remain.
  • A result above 100% is mathematically correct for the entered target but may be impossible without extra credit.
