What Is Sand Calculator?

A sand calculator estimates the loose material volume required to fill a measured area to a selected depth. It can be used for landscaping beds, construction fill, playgrounds, paver bases, and other projects where sand is purchased by volume or weight.

The weight conversion uses an editable default density of 100 lb/ft³. Dry, damp, washed, masonry, play, and pool-filter sands can differ substantially, so supplier density is preferable when ordering by ton.

How the Sand Calculator Works

The calculator multiplies the measured area by depth and applies the selected waste allowance to estimate order volume.

For a weight estimate, it multiplies adjusted cubic feet by the entered bulk density and converts pounds to U.S. short tons.

Sand volume = Area × Depth × (1 + Waste %); weight = Volume × Bulk density

Example

A 10 ft by 10 ft area filled 2 inches deep has 16.67 ft³ of raw volume. With 10% waste, it requires about 18.33 ft³ or 0.68 yd³ and weighs about 0.92 tons at 100 lb/ft³.
