Limits and Important Notes

Result type: Planning estimate

Calculation Details

  • Multiply wall length by height for gross square footage.
  • Subtract the area of doors, windows, and other openings.
  • Divide net area by the nominal block face module and add waste.
  • Round the final purchase quantity up to a whole block.

Formula

Blocks = ceil(((length × height − openings) ÷ nominal block face area) × (1 + waste%))

Rounding

Areas display to two decimals; blocks to purchase always round up.

Default Assumptions

  • The default face module is nominally 8 by 16 inches and includes the typical mortar-joint module.
  • The wall is rectangular and one block thick.
  • Cuts, breakage, bond pattern, reinforcement, and site loss are represented only by the selected waste percentage.

Verified Example

Inputs: 20 ft long, 8 ft high, no openings, standard 8×16 nominal face, and 5% waste.

Calculation: 160 sq ft ÷ 0.8889 sq ft = 180 blocks; 180 × 1.05 = 189.

Result: Purchase estimate = 189 blocks.
